How to find a good river cruise for less than £1,000

We’re keen to try a river cruise but looking to spend less than £2,000 for two of us. Is it still possible to travel on a decent ship?

Jane Archer, cruise expert, replies:

The top-end river cruise companies are expensive because they include a lot in the price, from flights and transfers to shore excursions and wine, beer or soft drinks with dinner. Already good value for money, many also throw in wine and soft drinks with lunch and gratuities; several include drinks throughout the day as well.

However, there are plenty of less-inclusive lines that do not charge as much upfront and allow you to pick and mix when it comes to on-board amenities. Shearings (0844 824 6351; and The River Cruise Line (0843 5611 104; both offer holidays for less than £500 per person, but charge for excursions, and package their cruises around coach and ferry travel from the UK, rather than flights.
